No Image
Name

Asante

Gender Female
Species Hyena

Asante is a hyena who makes her first and only appearance in Friends for Life, and is mentioned in Fight for The Throne.

Asante is a hyena, and likely resembles the other hyenas in the Lion King franchise.

Kopa: "Of course! That is great!"
Asante: "Well, I am still a little bit afraid of them...but we are friends after all, right?"
Kopa: "Of course we are! You and me! Come on, let's race there!"
Asante: "You're always so slow!"
—Asante and Kopa

Unlike the other hyenas who appear in The Lion King, Asante is good and kind-hearted. Though she is suspicious of lions, due to her ancestry, she is an overall accepting character, as she readily accepts and befriends Kopa. She is very open and friendly, as well as outgoing and spunky. She is also considerably brave and loyal, as she rushes to Kopa's aid when he is in trouble. The two are inseparable, despite the gap between their species. Asante's good intentions and tender heart set her apart as one of the few hyenas who serves as friends of Simba's pride.

History

Asante is rescued from a snake by the young prince Kopa. They later meet up again and play with each other. One day, while the two are together, Kopa falls into a river. Asante fetches a friend of hers to rescue him. She then guides him home, and eventually decides to meet his parents.

Fisi is a hyena featured in the story "Kampf um den Thron" or "Battle for the Throne".

Appearance

Fisi is a hyena, and likely resembles other hyenas in The Lion King franchise.

Personality

Ed: "Exactly."
—Fisi and Ed about Kesho

The story mentions even some of the other hyenas don't like Fisi, and fights tend to break out whenever he's around.

Fuli

Gender Female
Species Cheetah

Fuli is a cheetah who serves as a main character in The Lion Guard.

Appearance

Fuli is a cheetah cub with smooth features and a lithe build. Her coat is of a vivid golden-yellow pigment, broken only by patches of tan on her chest and muzzle, and around her eyes. Dark spots that look more like jaguar rosettes than normal cheetah spots dot her back, head, and legs, some of which are hollow and centered with gold while others are fully brown.

The fact that some look like stripes and complete circles insinuates that she is actually a king cheetah. Notably, she is missing the streaks under her eyes that would be seen on an actual cheetah.
Canon Fuli

A full-body shot of a lounging Fuli

Fuli has a brown nose and pale paws. She has large emerald-green eyes surrounded by a shade of yellow paler than that of her main fur color and long, thin black eyebrows. Her legs are long and her ears are pointed, rimmed with the same dark color as her spots, with her inner ear being the same soft brown shade as her nose. Her Mark of the Lion Guard is imprinted in gold on her shoulder below a ring marking, and her claws are light silver.

History

As Kion and Bunga play Baobab Ball, Bunga hops on Fuli's back for a lift. Noticing the honey badger, Fuli stops short, flinging him off. Later, Fuli is chosen to be the Lion Guard's fastest member by her friend Kion. Though Simba doubts her and the others, they prove their worth by defeating Janja and his hyena clan. Goigoijackal

He has four paler spots on the area between his neck and shoulders, and the black on his back extends to the top of his head. His lower teeth protrude from his lip, and his face is round and scruffy. A few hairs sprout from his chin and the top of his head. His inner ears are dark brown, rimmed with a pale beige stripe on the outer side. His paws are a paler brown than his primary fur color, and his underbelly and muzzle are even lighter in color. A few spots dot his muzzle just before his nose.

Personality

Though the jackals are known for being schemers, Goigoi is not the brightest, being only able to think with his stomach, and has a tendency to lounge about and sleep. Even so, he takes a devious delight in his mate's scheming, and he has a habit of agreeing with everything Reirei says. He's able to engage in trickery and manipulation himself, though sometimes slips up, which usually provokes a vicious kick from Reirei.

History

When Goigoi first appears, he follows his son Dogo into the Pride Lands along with his mate Reirei. They attack at Kupatana, but are driven out by the Lion Guard.

Later, Tamaa the drongo mimics Goigoi's voice in order to frighten a hare.

Janja

Janja-Headshot
Name

Janja

Gender Male
Species Hyena

Janja is a male hyena who serves as the main antagonist of The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar and a recurring antagonist in its follow-up series The Lion Guard. He is the leader of a clan of hyenas that resides in the Outlands.

Appearance

Janja is an ashen-gray hyena with a lighter underbelly and darker spots along his back. His mane is spiked back, and there is a notch in his left ear. Unlike his clan, whose tails are all black, the underside of Janja's tail is gray. Janja and the rest of his clan don't appear to be fully grown, as they are only slightly bigger than a lion cub.

Janja ID

Janja has a round, dark muzzle and a black nose. His eyebrows are thick and black, and his eyes are rimmed in darker fur. His pointed ears are black, with dull pink inner ears that have tufts of fur sprouting from them. Janja's underbelly and chest are grayish beige. His upper body is considerably more muscular than his lower body, and his legs are sturdy and stout. Janja's sclerae are yellow.

Personality

Like his hyena ancestors before him, Janja is a greedy and selfish leader with no regard for the Circle of Life. His unabated hunger drives him to extreme measures, as he is willing to stand against Simba and the Lion Guard, and his ruthless nature shines through in even everyday interactions.

Janja is unforgiving to his minions and mercilessly mocks them in front of the clan, refusing to believe their excuses and stories. This is likely because his minions are not his friends; they are simply a means to an end, for Janja is crafty and uses his clan mates to do his dirty work for him. Janja's intelligence is undeniable. Surrounded on all sides by witless hyenas, he stands out as the one clever member of the clan, utilizing his allies to take down the Circle of Life. Under Janja's guidance, the hyenas prove a great threat, especially since they are often swayed to his side through his natural charisma and cunning. Janja will ensure that the clan's goals always align with his own.

Despite his ruthless ambition and sharp intellect, Janja is a coward when the odds are no longer in his favor, and he is known to promptly turn tail and run when faced with a fair fight.

History

Janja and his clan attempt to take down a herd of gazelles. The Lion Guard stop them, and they retreat into the Outlands. But Janja is not so easily thwarted, and he continually returns to the Pride Lands with a new scheme.

Trivia

  • Although Janja is written as the leader of his clan, a hyena clan is realistically led by a female.
  • A teaser for The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar confirms that Janja's clan is descended from the hyenas of the original film.

Jasiri

Jasiri Headshot
Name

Jasiri

Gender Female
Species Hyena

Jasiri is a hyena who appears in The Lion Guard.

Appearance

Jasiri Fullbody

Jasiri's pelt is even purple-gray, with dark spots and stripes running along her back and shoulders, and her eyes are blue. A long, striped purple mane runs up her neck, ending in bangs above her forehead. Like Janja, Jasiri has lighter fur on the underside of her tail. Being only a cub, Jasiri is small in size, with a thin frame and slender legs. Especially in comparison to the much larger and beefier Janja, she is delicate and lithe, with an affinity for agility and speed. However, her strength is apparent in her fight with Janja's clan, where she demonstrates an array of powerful moves for a hyena of her size.

Jasiri has a couple of narrow, round spots under each eye. Her ears, which are darker in color than her primary fur color, are round, with pink inner ears. Even when Jasiri's jaws are closed, two of her upper teeth are always visible.

Personality

Unlike most devious Outlanders, Jasiri is friendly and open to making friends with lions. However, her tie to her species shines through in how often she laughs, for even Kion notes that the world is like a giant game to her. She's a little sarcastic. Bold and spunky, Jasiri is a hyena through-and-through, but unlike Janja, she is a friend to the Pride Landers.

Jasiri is able to look past differences and focus on where different species have common ground. Unlike Janja and his clan, she is disgusted by selfishness and gluttony, and respects the Circle of Life.

History

Jasiri appeared in an episode of The Lion Guard. She followed Kion after he entered her territory in the Outlands, eventually showing herself. She showed the young lion that they are not as different as he thinks by singing "We're the Same (Sisi Ni Sawa)". After he leaves, Jasiri is surrounded by Janja's clan. She manages to fight them on her own until Janja pins her. However, she is saved by Kion after he returns. Shortly after, the Lion Guard arrives, and Fuli and Jasiri growl at each other. Kion is able to assure them that Jasiri is a friend, and Kion and Jasiri part ways.

Trivia

  • Jasiri is similar to Asante, a female hyena cub from The Lion King German audio book Friends for Life who befriends Simba's son Kopa.
  • In Swahili, 'jasiri' means 'brave' or 'daring'.

Kiara

Kiara Headshot
Name

Kiara

Gender Female
Species Lion
Close Relations Simba (father) Nala (mother) Kopa (brother) Kion (brother)

Kiara is the main protagonist of The Lion King II: Simba's Pride and a supporting character in The Lion Guard. She is the daughter of Simba and Nala, Kion's older sister and the mate of Kovu. She has one unofficial sibling, Kopa.

Appearance

As a cub, Kiara is small and soft-featured, less robust and stocky than her father but just as lithe and sleek as her mother. Kiara's pelt is of a more golden tone, like that of her father's, but it is tempered by the creamy hues of her mother. As a result, she isn't as rich a gold as her father or grandfather. Her muzzle, paws, and underbelly are all paler in color, while her tail tuft is creamy brown in color. Her eyes are red-brown with bright yellow sclerae, with a dark magenta nose.

Kiara Fullbody

A full-body shot of Kiara

Kiara shaded

Kiara as a cub

Come young adulthood, Kiara has grown into a young lioness, though she remains small in size, only coming up to her father's chest and her mother's shoulder. She is easily dwarfed in size by Kovu, who is roughly the same age as she is, and proves to be one of the smallest, if not the smallest lioness in her pride. Despite this, she proves herself to be agile and swift, able to keep pace with a herd of topiand haul herself over the edge of a steep cliff during a fire. Unlike most Pride Landers, Kiara remains the same light shade from her cubhood, not darkening with age as her parents did, though this could be attributed to her not being a full-grown adult yet. From cubhood to young adulthood, Kiara remains the same as far as coloration goes.

Personality

As a cub, Kiara is curious and wild-hearted, constantly seeking new adventures and easily fraught at the sight of her safe nest back home in the Pride Lands. Her hunger for adventure often leads her to outright rebellion, as she continuously disobeys her parents, purposefully ignoring their better judgment in order to explore the Outlands and get answers to her unresolved questions. This deliberate disobedience echoes her father's mistakes in the first film, though Kiara does not show as much remorse as Simba once did, instead insisting on disobedience, a trait which carries into her young adult life.

When Kiara is an older cub, she becomes far more responsible. She develops an interest in being the queen of the Pride Lands, and tends to think things through more logically, though she can still make rash decisions.

As a young adult, Kiara remains almost identical to her cub self in personality. Still wild at heart, she longs to escape her father's overprotective wing, proving herself to be even more determined than ever to gain independence. In doing so, Kiara often rejects the truth, wanting to make herself seem as though everything is in her control. Despite her headstrong ways, Kiara is also caring and fun-loving. She is forgiving and kind, willing to look past differences to do what she believes to be right.

History

Kiara is born to Simba and Nala and presented to the animals of the Pride Lands. Later, as a cub, she is eager to go explore the Pride Lands. After proving to her father that she is aware of how to behave, she escapes her babysitters Timon and Pumbaa and ventures to the Outlands and meets Kovu, an Outsider lion cub. They escape a float of crocodiles together, and she attempts to play with him. Their parents arrive and put a stop to their meeting. Kiara is taken home by her father, who sings her the song "We Are One", with Kiara joining in at one point.

Later, Kiara goes to track gazelles with a few of her friends. Though she is delayed by Zuri getting injured, eventually she and her other friend Tiifu manage to reach the gazelles- but not before Kiara informs Simba that her brother Kion has chosen a honey badger to be a member of his Lion Guard. While stalking the gazelles, she notices some hyenas approaching the herd and sends Tiifu to fetch her parents. While she is alone, the hyenas begin attacking the gazelles. Kion and his Lion Guard arrive and stop them, but Kiara is caught in the stampede. Thankfully, she is rescued by Bunga.

Simba embracing Kiara

Simba embraces Kiara before her first hunt

When Kiara is a young adult, she goes on her first hunt. However, a fire begins burning towards her, and she cannot escape it in time. She is rescued by Kovu, but when she awakens, she is furious at him, insisting that she was doing fine on her own. Her parents arrive, and Kovu is reluctantly accepted into the pride. Kiara arranges a hunting lesson with him the next day.

Kiara vs Zira

Kiara battles Zira

They spend almost all of their time together, roaring at birds and evading rhinos. But after taking Kovu out with him and being attacked by the Outsiders, Simba exiles Kovu, ignoring Kiara's pleas. Kiara seeks him out, and they return in time to stop a battle between the Outsiders and the Pride Landers. Kiara prevents Kovu's mother Zira from attacking Simba, resulting in Zira's death. Kiara and Kovu are later married, and they roar over the kingdom with Simba and Nala.

Kion

Kion Headshot
Name

Kion

Gender Male
Species Lion
Close Relations Simba (father)

Nala (mother) Kopa (brother) Kiara (sister)

Kion is the main protagonist of The Lion Guard. He serves as the prince of the Pride Lands and the leader of the Lion Guard.

Appearance

Though quite similar in appearance to his father Simba, Kion bears a striking resemblance to his paternal grandfather, Mufasa. While Simba is more rounded in appearance, Kion is robust and block-like, with a square jaw and a pronounced chest.

From Simba, he inherited dark ear rims and orange-brown eyes. Kion has black ear rims on the lower side of the top his outer ears and brown ear rims circling his dark red-pink inner ear. Kion bears spots on the backs of his legs and the mark of the Lion Guard on his left shoulder. As far as coloring goes, Kion possesses a bright golden pelt broken only by patches of lighter fur on his muzzle, paws, and underbelly. His fur is several shades lighter than his father's, being more like his sister Kiara's, though Kion's fur carries more yellow undertones as opposed to his sister's orange.

Kion Fullbody

A full-body shot of Kion

Both Simba and Kion have or had a hair tuft, but Kion's tuft is much bushier, swept back, and bright red in color. The bushy tuft at the end of his tail matches his head tuft in color, and his eye rims follow the usual pattern, with the top shade being darker than his main pelt, while the bottom shade is lighter than his main pelt. Kion's eyebrows are thick, tapering at either end, and black. His Mark of the Guard is imprinted in orange on his left shoulder. Kion bears three brown whiskers on either side of his muzzle, and his nose is a bright brown shade. His paw pads are a dull pink, and his claws are glossy and gray, though they have been mistakenly depicted as white.

Personality

Kion is described as one who "defies tradition", as he has assembled a Guard that consists of creatures other than lions. In this way, he is open to other species and willing to give underdogs a chance at making a difference. He also shows signs of being level-headed, such as being reluctant to enter the Outlands, possibly due to the danger of it or his father's rule about not entering it.

Unlike his father when he was a cub, Kion is a stickler for the rules, obedient even in the face of temptation. His responsible nature shines through in his willingness to negotiate before starting a fight, as he only uses his powers for good, unlike his evil great-uncle, Scar. Despite these more mature traits, Kion is still playful by nature and enjoys a good tussle with his best friend, Bunga. He can get a bit carried away when in the midst of playing, but he remembers his responsibilities first and foremost, caving to the instructions of his well-meaning parents. Despite his reserve, Kion is a fierce lion who tackles enemies with firmness and courage, never failing to drive wrongdoers out of the Pride Lands. He is brave and, for the most part, confident in his abilities, though he can become insecure. Kion is always skeptical of seemingly far-fetched ideas.

Trivia

  • Kion's catchphrase 'Hevi kabisa' means 'Totally intense' in Swahili.
  • During early development, Kion sported a paw print mark on his shoulder, as opposed to the finalized lion head.

Close Relations Simba (father)

Nala (mother) Kion (brother) Kiara (sister)

Kopa is the son of Simba and Nala in The Lion King: Six New Adventures. He is the prince of the Pride Lands and Kion and Kiara's brother.

Appearance

Like Simba, Kopa possesses a rich golden pelt broken only by patches of lighter fur on his muzzle, paws, and underbelly, though Kopa's fur is a shade lighter than his father's, being a rich yellow. Both cubs have or had a hair tuft, but Kopa's tuft is much bushier and reddish-brown in color. His tail tuft matches his head tuft in color, being somewhat bushier than his father's, and his eye rims follow the usual pattern, with the top shade being darker than his main pelt while the bottom shade is lighter. From Simba, he inherited dark ear rims and orange eyes.

Personality

Much like his father Simba, Kopa is a rambunctious cub with a good sense of adventure. His curiosity never seems to fail him, leading him into many a situation around the Pride Lands, though his naivety often gets him into trouble. Even for a young cub, Kopa is considerably innocent, not always understanding even simple figures of speech, such as "family trees." Combined with his curiosity, his limited understanding of the world prompts him into action, leading him into trouble more often than not.

Kopa's pride is in part due to his idol, Simba. Throughout the book series, Kopa makes it clear that he looks up to and adores his father, always wanting to be around him and boasting that he will one day grow up to be just like him. When Simba breaks a promise to Kopa, the cub is deeply hurt, taking the kingly decision as a deep personal blow. His attachment to his father mirrors Simba's relationship with Mufasa, rendering the two very close and almost inseparable.

History

Kopa appears throughout The Lion King: Six New Adventures. Though he experiences a few adventures of his own, a most of the adventures are stories told to him.

Trivia

  • In an interview with Phil Weinstein, the storyboard director of The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, Weinstein admitted he had no knowledge of Kopa during the production of the film.
  • As Alex Simmons confirms, Kopa was never truly affiliated with Disney and was solely his creation with Disney's label.
  • According to Alex Simmons, the book series Kopa appears in is a prequel to The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, thus in-line with the movie franchise.

Nuka (brother) Vitani (sister) Kiara (mate)

Kovu is the secondary deuteragonist of The Lion King II: Simba's Pride and a character in The Lion Guard. He is the chosen heir of Scar who defies the Outsiders after falling in love with Kiara.

Appearance

Kovu Full-body

A full-body shot of Kovu

Cub Kovu

Kovu as a cub, reflecting his confident nature.

Kovu is noted by many to bear a strong resemblance to Scar, especially after his face is scarred, despite not being related to him. As a cub, Kovu has dark rims marking his ears, but he loses these come adolescence. He bears a dark tuft of hair that will eventually grow into a mane.

Kovu is robust and muscular lion, with a large, square jaw and small ears. His has dark reddish-brown fur with a dull cream muzzle, underbelly, and paws. His sclerae are yellow, and his eyes are emerald green, with small, round pupils. His mane, tail tuft, and the tufts on his elbows are dark brown. He has four whiskers on either side of his muzzle, and his nose is black and sharply edged. Kovu's mane is short and scruffy, with a tuft rising above his head. The fur around his eyes is darker than that of his primary fur color, and his eyebrows are black. His left eye has a pink scar running through it. The fur on his cheeks is long, even as a cub, and curves into points at either end. He has dark brown inner ears and white teeth.

Personality

Having grown up under the care of the scheming Zira, Kovu is aggressive and crude, even as a cub. Upon first meeting Kiara, his first reaction is to snarl a challenge, and the only game he appears to understand is play-fighting. His violent tendencies are reinforced by a knack for taking care of himself, as he is physically fit and an able hunter, two features that make way for his more arrogant and cocky side. Even as a cub, Kovu strives to please and takes no shame in showing off to the more innocent Kiara. However, when faced by his mother, Kovu is submissive and prone to showing his softer side, exposing a desire to befriend and treat kindly the new cub he has just met.

After meeting Kiara again as a young adult, Kovu begins to cave to his inner good, proving himself to enjoy laughter and good times. His dark side occasionally slips in, as seen when he can only pinpoint violent pictures among the stars, and his ties to Scar and his mother continuously bog him down. He does ultimately choose to betray his pride, revealing that even years of evil and violence cannot destroy the kindness in his heart. He becomes gentler with Kiara and more respectful of her, no longer mocking her for that which she cannot do. Having shown his good side, Kovu matures into a character who is always willing to do the right thing, even if it means disappointing those he loves.

History

Kovu is chosen by Scar to be his heir. After Scar's death, when Zira and the Outsiders are exiled to the Outlands, Kovu goes along with them. One day, as a cub, he meets Kiara, a Pride Lander lioness cub. They escape danger and play together, but their parents arrive and put a stop to their games. That night, Zira sings the son "My Lullaby" to Kovu.

Kovu saves Kiara

Kovu rescues Kiara

Later, Kovu, now an adult, is sent by Zira to rescue Kiara from a fire that his siblings started. He succeeds, and is therefore accepted into Simba's pride. Though he is supposed to kill Simba, he does not, and instead spends most of his time with Kiara, whom he falls in love with as they chase birds and stargaze together.

One of Us

Kovu is exiled

However, when he goes out to a barren area with Simba, the Outsiders attack, and Zira stages it as though it were a plot set up by Kovu. Blaming Kovu for betrayal, Simba exiles the young lion. Kiara seeks him out, and together they return to stop a battle between the Outsiders and the Pride Landers. Simba accepts Kovu into the pride once the battle is stopped, and he later is married to Kiara. He roars over the kingdom along his Simba, Nala, and Kiara.

Trivia

  • Kovu's mane was originally going to be slicker and black, and his eyes bright green to match his intended father, Scar. These were later changed, along with his relation to Scar.
  • In Swahili, 'kovu' means 'scar'.
  • There is a deleted scene in The Lion King II: Simba's Pride where Kovu first catches a bug, then allows it to fly away. Zira then kills the bug herself, angry at her son's mercy. This suggests that during his childhood Kovu was partly trained by killing animals weaker than himself, so as to get him used to kill when he gets older.

Voice Actors

  • Ryan O'Donohue (cub; The Lion King II: Simba's Pride)
  • Jason Marsden (adult; The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, The Lion Guard)
  • Gene Miller (adult singing; The Lion King II: Simba's Pride)

Kula is a friend of Nala's who appears in Nala's Dare, the second book in The Lion King: Six New Adventures.

Appearance

Kula has anatomy similar to Nala's. Her fur is caramel-brown and her eyes are a reddish color. She has a pink nose, a pale muzzle and underbelly, and a dark brown tail-tuft.

Personality

Kula: "Come on, Nala, don't be a lunatic. Maybe you're thinking crazy things because you're hungry. Yeah, maybe you're light-headed from hunger."
Nala: "I told you - I'm not afraid of anything. And I don't get out of dares. Chumvi thinks I'm chicken, but I'm not."
Kula: "Nala, get real. That strange lion could be super dangerous."
Nala: "I'll get up before dawn - before my mom gets up. And I'll look for that lion on the far side of Pride Rock."
Kula: "You're nuts, crazed, psycho, unhinged! Do you hear me? Well, I guess I'll have to get up before dawn and stop you."
—Kula and Nala argue about Chumvi's dare

Kula is known to be very cautious, as well as concerned about the safety of others. She isn't much of a dare-devil and is against the idea of Nala talking to Ni. She is also shown to be a caring friend, as she is willing to go to extreme measures to keep Nala safe. It's also hinted at by Nala that Kula is lazy, as Nala comments that Kula has never gotten up before dawn in her life. Aside from these traits, Kula can mainly be identified by her extreme love for food; in almost any situation, she can connect feelings, sayings, and even other lions to some form of food or meal.

Trivia

  • In Swahili, 'kula' means 'to eat'.

Ma is the secondary tritagonist of The Lion King 1½. She is the mother of Timon.

Appearance

Mafullbody

Ma is a small and somewhat plump meerkat with wide cheeks, small paws, and thick arms. Her fur is smooth and light pinkish-tan, broken by her paler underbelly and paws. She has four taupe-brown stripes marking her back, and her toes and tail-tip are neutral brown in color. She has round, dark brown ears with lighter brown inner ears. Her glossy nose and eyebrows are both chocolate-colored as well. The area around each of her dark chartreuse eyes is pinkish-brown, and her eyelids are the same color as her primary fur color. Atop her head is a scruffy patch of pink-orange fur that sticks up slightly.

Personality

Ma: "Max, Timon's out there chasing metaphors! I gotta go find him!"
Uncle Max: "Are you nuts?!"
Ma: "Nice to have a supportive family, isn't it?"
—Ma and Uncle Max

Ma is a devoted and supportive mother. She is very down-to-earth about what's important and will sacrifice her time and efforts to make others happy. She is also the only meerkat who's willing to stick up for Timon when he messes up. Throughout the film, she yearns for him to fit in and be happy. When he tells her that his place is not with his colony, she reluctantly lets him leave, in hopes that he'll find a better home. But she has a very strong attachment to Timon, as she can hardly stand being parted from him. Other traits of Ma's include bravery, devotion, a willingness to help, and forgiveness. She is also known to be sassy and strong-willed at times. Throughout the film, she tries to keep Timon's hair as neat as possible.

History

At the beginning of the third Lion King film, Ma searches for her son Timon. After Timon destroys a tunnel, he pulls him aside and teaches him about the position of the meerkats. Later on, she nominates Timon for sentry duty. However, he fails, and tells her that he will not fit in and that his place is elsewhere. Despite her protests, he insists. She hugs him, and he departs while she gives him reminders.

After a dispute with Rafiki, Ma sets off to 'save' Timon. Years later, she shows up at Pride Rock and delightedly embraces him. Ma, with the help of Uncle Max, digs a trap for the hyenas that are present. However, they are not finished in time, and Timon is forced to destroy a tunnel supporter. After the tunnel gives way upon being leaped on by Shenzi the hyena, Ma becomes frantic, believing Timon to be dead, but he soon reappears. Once again, she hugs him, calling him a hero and combing his hair.

Timon then shows Ma his jungle 'dream home', which she is awestruck by. At Timon's invitation, the meerkat colony moves into the jungle.

Trivia

  • A different portrayal of Ma appears in a Timon and Pumbaa episode, "You Bet Your Tuhkus." She also appears in "Mombasa-In-Law," however, at the end she is revealed to be Timon's practical joking friend Fred in disguise.

Mufasa

Mufasa
Name

Mufasa

Gender Male
Species Lion
Close Relations Ahadi (father) Uru (mother) Scar (brother) Sarabi (mate) Simba (son)

Mufasa is the secondary deuteragonist of The Lion King, a minor character in The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, and a major character in The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar and its following TV series The Lion Guard. He is Simba's father, Sarabi's mate, Scar's older brother, Ahadi and Uru's eldest son and king of the Pride Lands at the start of the film.

Appearance

Mufasa is a large, powerful male lion with distinctive golden-yellow fur inherited from his father, Ahadi, which he passes on to his son Simba. He is given broad shoulders and a pronounced jaw to make him seem king-like and the most powerful lion, according to his animators.

He is extremely muscular, with a large, powerful body and strong legs. He has a thick red mane, and reddish-brown eyes. His stomach, muzzle, and paws are a lighter cream color. He also has a brown nose, tan whiskers, and a yellow tail. As the alpha lion, he is very powerful physically and skilled in fighting, being able to effortlessly defeat Shenzi, Banzai and Ed even when they attack him at the same time. Scar, though he is also a formidable fighter, confesses that Mufasa got the "brute strength" and claims he wouldn't dream of challenging him to a fight.

Personality

Image. Rafiki and Mufasa

Mufasa hugs Rafiki

Despite his strong exterior, Mufasa is kind at heart and playful, showing respect for all the creatures, even those who are perceived as lower than himself. He is not strictly business, often playing games with his majordomo Zazu, and is unafraid of showing affection, as seen when he greets Rafiki with a hug prior to the presentation of Simba. In family life, Mufasa is just as soft-hearted, treating his mate with gentle respect and treating his son fairly, even when the cub deliberately disobeys his parents' instruction.

Mufasa's wisdom is reinforced by his eternal bravery, seen from his first tussle with the hyenas to his final stand against a stampede of wildebeests. To Simba, he explains that he is only brave when the situation demands it, showing Mufasa to be rational with courage and level-headed enough to know when interference is needed. If his family is endangered, Mufasa exposes his protective side, ready to throw himself into danger in order to keep those he loves safe. Ultimately, he is willing to sacrifice his life for his family, proving his love to be stronger for his family than for himself.

History

Mufasa watches his son Simba presented by Rafiki. Later on, he argues with his brother Scar, angry at him for not attending the ceremony. He wonders aloud what he is going to do with him. When Simba is an older cub, he awakens Mufasa, and the two sit atop Pride Rock. Mufasa teaches Simba about the kingdom that will soon belong to his and explains the Circle of Life. He receives the morning report from his majordomo, Zazu, and soon hears that hyenas are in the Pride Lands. He denies Simba's request to come and runs off. However, Simba gets into trouble when he enters the Elephant Graveyard. Mufasa roars and saves Simba, along with his friend Nala, from a trio of hungry hyenas. Mufasa scolds Simba, but ends up teaching him a lesson about the Great Kings of the Past and playing with him.

Not long after, Mufasa hears from Scar that Simba is in the Gorge where the wildebeests are stampeding. Mufasa pulls Simba out of the path of danger and tries to climb the sides of the ravine. However, he ends up beneath Scar. Mufasa asks Scar to help him, but instead, Scar sinks his claws into Mufasa's paws, eliciting a cry of pain, before flinging him into the midst of the running animals. Mufasa ends up dead, to his son's devestation.

He later appears as a spirit in the clouds, telling Simba that he had forgotten about him and who he is. He reminds him to remember before leaving.

Mufasa is present in the second film, watching over his family as his granddaughter is presented. He also appears in The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar, first in a cave painting as Rafiki tells his story, and later as a ghost to bolster his grandson Kion's spirit. Since then, he has appeared in multiple episodes of The Lion Guard to impart advice.

Her eyebrows are also much thinner than those of her fellow cub, Simba, and her inner ears and the tip of her tail are brown in color. Her eyes appear to be glaucous green, though they change to teal in certain light, and her nose is pink. Nala Full-body

A full-body shot of Nala as an adult

Come young adulthood, Nala looks almost identical to her mother Sarafina. Her body has filled out to become sleeker and stronger, fitting the physique of a practiced hunter. She also proves herself to be exceptionally strong, able to hold her own against the much larger Simba, even managing to pin him on his back. Her fur darkens to an even tawny. She has brown paw pads and her nose is now dark pink-brown. The fur on her chin is shorter and smoother, though still slightly scruffy.

As a fully grown adult and queen, Nala's colors have been shown as either paling or continuing to grow darker. Her eyes become more blue, having been depicted as shifting to bright sky blue or teal, and she fills out, growing smoother and more muscular in stature.

Personality

As a cub, Nala is playful, spirited, and spunky. She and Simba are best friends, and the two are nearly inseparable. Unknown to them, they are betrothed at an early age, and both agree that friends marrying each other is too weird once they discover this fact.

As a young adult, Nala matures into a determined and assertive young lioness. Simba remarks that her words remind him of his wise father's, albeit in a derogatory manner. In the sequel, Nala has become much more mild-mannered and motherly. She acts as the voice of reason to Simba, who is now being very protective of Kiara, and reminds him that their daughter Kiara would be fine. She also is less judgmental than Simba, and is often able to persuade him to have more faith in their cubs.

History

As a cub, Nala plays with her friend Simba, whom she is bethrothed to. When Scar proclaims Simba to be dead, Nala is sorrowful and sheds tears for her lost friend.

Nala vs Hyena

Nala battles a hyena

When she grows up, Nala leaves the Pride Lands to search for help and food, which has been running scarce ever since Scar took over. She discovers Pumbaa, a warthog, and pursues him. To her surprise, she encounters her old friend Simba. The two reunite and fall in love during the song "Can You Feel the Love Tonight". Afterwards, she returns to Pride Rock with Simba and rallies the lionesses into battle against the hyenas. Scar is defeated, and Simba takes over the Pride Lands with Nala as his queen.

They have two cubs, Kion and Kiara. Nala is supportive of Kion when he becomes the leader of the Lion Guard. She becomes involved with in some of her son's later adventures. Kiara is saved by a lion named Kovu when she is an adult, and Nala convinces Simba to let Kovu join the pride. Nala was also present during the battle between the Outsiders and Pride Landers. She battles Vitani. She later witnesses the marriage between Kovu and Kiara, then roars over her kingdom.

Pumbaa

It means no worries
Name

Pumbaa

Gender Male
Species Warthog

Pumbaa is a male warthog in The Lion King, The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, The Lion King 1½, The Lion King's Timon & Pumbaa, and The Lion Guard.

Appearance

Pumbaa has a smooth russet red coat with a mane of short black hair sprouting from his head and running down his neck. The tuft of hair at the end of his tail is also black in color. He is a large, well-built animal with a huge, round lower jaw and two ivory-colored tusks protruding from his upper jaw. Pumbaa's nose and inner ears are pink, and his small eyes are black with yellow sclerae.

Personality

Due to his friendly, loyal, and protective personality, Pumbaa is generally regarded as a very likable character. However, he displays childlike naivety which is sometimes confused for stupidity. He does, in fact, come up with some intelligent plans and insightful ideas, which Timon rapidly claims as his own.

Pumbaa is also kind and caring, as shown when he, unlike Timon, takes pity on Simba and is quick to offer his assistance to the young cub. In The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, he jumps into a rather shallow body of water to save a supposedly drowning Kiara and offers assistance to a badly injured Simba, carrying him all the way back to Pride Rock after an unexpected ambush with the Outsiders. In addition, Pumbaa appears to be polite to those who are friendly, as shown when he greets Nala right after Simba introduces him to her, despite the fact that Nala had tried to eat him a few minutes earlier. Notwithstanding, he expects respect from his enemies, which indicates when he attack Banzai after he is addressed on a "pig."

History

When he was a young warthog, Pumbaa struggled socially due to his flatulence troubles. However, he later met Timon, and the two became friends. One day, they encountered an exhausted lion cub named Simba. They brought him to the Jungle Oasis and taught him about "hakuna matata"("no worries"). They introduced Simba to a diet of insects and grubs, which he grew up on.

One day, Nala arrived in the jungle and chased a terrified Pumbaa. Timon tries to help Pumbaa, but ultimately it is Simba who comes to the rescue. However, Timon and Pumbaa are downhearted after Nala and Simba fall in love. Timon tells Pumbaa that Simba is doomed, and the two of them burst into tears.

They later accompany Simba back to Pride Rock, where they distract the hyenas so that Simba and Nala's presence would not be detected. Simba's evil uncle Scar is defeated, and Timon and Pumbaa stay with their pal in the Pride Lands.

Trivia

  • In the Timon & Pumbaa episode "Home is Where the Hog Is," it is revealed that Pumbaa's last name is Smith.

Scar

Smirkyscar
Name

Scar

Gender Male
Species Lion
Close Relations Mufasa (brother) Simba (nephew)

Scar is the main antagonist of The Lion King. He is the former king of the Pride Lands and the brother of Mufasa.

Appearance

Thin and slender, with sharp features and skinny legs, Scar is the physical opposite of his brother. He is taller than the lionesses in the pride, though shorter than Mufasa. His movements are all sleek and snakelike; he was intentionally designed this way. He has burnt rusty orange fur, with pale tan areas on his paws, muzzle, and underbelly. His eyes are bright green. Scar's narrow nose and sharp claws are black. A pink scar runs through his left eye.

Personality

Scar is devious and cunning, thinking up schemes to secure himself power. He shies away from physical challenges that he knows he cannot win, but will nevertheless fight when he must. He goes to any lengths to achieving what he wants, even allying himself with hyenas, which he finds to be idiotic. He is power-hungry and persistent, but is a poor authority figure, as he cares not for the lands or lionesses he rules. Once he has what he wants, Scar becomes indolent and unwilling to solve the issues ravaging the Pride Lands. He believes that kings may do whatever they like, and has a tendency to blame others when things go wrong rather than accepting the truth.

History

As a cub, Scar became the leader of the Lion Guard. As he grew older, he grew jealous, believing that he should rule the Pride Lands instead of his older brother Mufasa. When Scar, said to be named Taka at the time, is older, he tries to trick Mufasa out of being future king, but fails, left with nothing but the scar that is to give him his name. He eventually kills his Lion Guard using the Roar of the Elders when they refuse to help him murder Mufasa.

Scar resides in a cave in the Pride Lands, where he catches a mouse. The majordomo Zazu arrives, announcing the impending presence of Scar's brother, the king Mufasa. Scar attempts to eat Zazu, but Mufasa arrives and orders Scar to drop him. After a terse exchange between the two brothers, primarily regarding Scar's choice not too attend the presentation of Mufasa's son and the future king; Simba, Scar leaves the cave.

Scar is later approached by young Simba, now old enough to walk about on his own, who tells him about a lesson Mufasa gave him. Irritated, Scar makes a few dry remarks before "accidentally" letting slip that the one place Mufasa doesn't want Simba to go is an Elephant Graveyard. He then flatters Simba and requests that he keeps the exchange a secret. Scar soon meets up with his hyena followers and sings the musical number "Be Prepared" to explain what lies in store for them; including Mufasa and Simba's deaths and not going hungry.

Scar later takes his nephew to the Gorge under the pretense of a surprise. He refuses to tell Simba what the surprise is, and advises him to work on his "little roar" before traveling up the gorge and making himself visible to three of his hyena minions. They begin and wildebeest stampede, and Scar rushes off to alert Mufasa. He tells his brother that Simba is down there, and the two, along with Zazu, urgently run to the gorge. Scar scans the stampede along with Mufasa, then watches as his brother dives down to save Simba. Now alone with Scar, Zazu decides to fetch help in a panic, and Scar knocks him into the side of the gorge. When Mufasa begins climbing up the gorge, having gotten Simba to safety, he asks Scar for help. Scar leans down, thrusts his claws into Mufasa's paws and tells him "Long live the king" before flinging him off of the cliff, resulting in Mufasa's death.

Scar then approaches a grieving Simba, who is crying by his father's side. He asks what Simba has done, and though he notes that nobody ever means for these things to happen, the fact remains that Mufasa is dead, and it is Simba's fault. He wonders what Simba's mother will think, then advises Simba to run away and never return. Simba obeys, dashing through the gorge, and the hyenas that provoked the stampede emerge from behind Scar. He orders them to kill Simba.

Scar returns to Pride Rock, bearing the news of Mufasa and Simba's deaths. In the dark of the night, he mourns for his lost brother and nephew, but announces the dawning of a new era. His hyena followers emerge, and Scar ascends Pride Rock as the new king. During his reign, Scar traps Zazu in a rib cage and forces him to sing songs. He cares not for the lack of food that is plaguing the Pride Lands, and become enraged at anyone who dares to speak Mufasa's name. He soon calls the lioness Sarabi forward, demanding to know why the hunting party is failing to return with prey. He insists that it can be found despite Sarabi's claims that the herds have moved on. Finally, he strikes her with enough force to knock her over. A fully grown Simba makes himself visible, surprising Scar, who initially believes him to be Mufasa. He shoots the hyenas that were supposed to kill Simba a glare before gesturing to the rest of the clan, explaining to Simba that they see him as king. The lioness Nala insists that Simba is king, and Simba threatens to fight him.

In response, Scar slinks around Simba, dropping hints about Mufasa's death. Simba informs him that such tricks will not work, but the lionesses' curiousity is sparked. Scar goads Simba into confessing that he killed Mufasa and forces Simba to back to the tip of Pride Rock, until he is finally gripping the edge with his forepaws. Scar notices the resemblance between Simba currently and Mufasa before he died, and whispers into Simba's ear that he killed the prince's father. Furious, Simba attacks Scar and pins him, making him admit to his crime. The hyenas attack, allowing Scar a chance to escape, but Simba follows, trapping him on Pride Rock. Scar begs for mercy and blames the hyenas, deeming them "the enemy", but Simba growls that everything Scar told him was a lie. Scar asks what Simba intends to do with him, and Simba reveals that he does not plan to kill him, as he is not like Scar. Scar discovers that Simba wants him to flee and never return, and responds by attacking him. Simba eventually flings him off of Pride Rock, where is he devoured by the hyenas, who feel that he betrayed them.

After Scar's death, a devoted follower of his, Zira, raises his chosen heir, Kovu. He is mentioned multiple times by Kovu, Zira, and Simba, and one night, Scar is featured in a nightmare of Simba's. After Kovu is exiled, he gazes into water, where he sees Scar as his reflection.

Trivia

  • In Six New Adventures, a series of books based off of The Lion King, it is said Scar was initially named Taka, a Swahili word meaning 'waste'.

Simba

Simba-Headshot
Name

Simba

Gender Male
Species Lion
Close Relations Scar (uncle) Mufasa (father)

Sarabi (mother) Nala (mate) Kopa (son) Kiara (daughter) Kion (son)

Simba is the main protagonist of The Lion King and the deuteragonist of The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, a supporting character in The Lion King 1½, The Lion Guard: Return Of The Roar, and The Lion Guard. He is the rightful king of the Pride Lands and the father of two children, Kion and Kiara, in addition to a third, unofficial cub; Kopa.

Appearance

Simba resembles both of his parents in different ways. From Mufasa, he inherited his strong build and pelt coloration, as both lions are gold with red manes though Simba's mane is a paler shade of vermilion. From his mother, Simba inherited dark ear rims (though he loses these when he reaches adulthood) and his general facial features, as they are noticeably less square than Mufasa's. He has five whiskers on either side of his muzzle. As a cub, the tuft at the end of his tail is brown, but come adulthood, it shifts into the same red hue as his mane.

Canon Simba

Young adult Simba

His eyes are vermilion, though they sometimes appear orange. His nose is pink, unlike those of his parents. He has relatively small, pointed ears, with darker orange inner ears. As is typical of Pride Lander lions, the areas between Simba's eyes and his eyebrows are darker than his main fur color, and the area beneath each eye is lighter.
Pride

Fully grown Simba

As Simba grows older, his fur becomes darker, and his mane becomes more full. His nose is darker and more blue-tinted, causing it to be a shade of purple, and his eyes are a more dull and reddish shade of scarlet. He is larger and sturdier with a wider face, likening his resemblance to his father Mufasa even further. His inner ears are darker, his mane is smoother, and his brown whiskers are longer. The fur on his muzzle, paws, and underbelly is still paler than his fur color, but is considerably less saturated. In addition, his eyebrows are slightly thicker.

Personality

As a cub, Simba was playful and always ready for an adventure with his best friend, Nala. He tried to see the best in everyone, even his uncle Scar. At times, he could be a show-off and arrogant, and boasted that he will be the greatest king ever, which often got himself and Nala into danger. In spite of this, he came to see the fault in his actions and always learned from his mistakes.

As an adolescent, Simba picks up a happy, carefree lifestyle, thinking nothing of his responsibilities back home. In addition, Simba's vocabulary changes moderately (as he now says "Father" instead of "Dad" and "Scar" instead of "Uncle Scar"). In the jungle, he develops somewhat grotesque habits, burping and eating bugs alongside his lazy companions. No longer the respected prince of the Pride Lands, Simba becomes sedentary and stubbornly refuting of his past life. Having been tainted in mind by his well-meaning friends, Simba no longer sees the need to help others and would rather lock himself away in bliss than face reality.

Despite his guilt-ridden conscience, Simba is forced into maturity when he has to face his past, holding himself accountable to the land he once swore to defend. Once accepting of his duties, he becomes a new character, stronger in will than before. Unlike the old Simba, who would rather avoid an argument, this new Simba does not tolerate being bullied and refuses to stand for abuse, being particularly defensive of his mother. When challenged, Simba becomes rough around the edges, determined to have his way and unwilling to stand for compromise. No longer an innocent cub, he is brave when he has to be, standing up for his land and his pride.

Once a full-grown adult and a father, Simba has matured to a new level, now totally fixated on his duties as a king and a father. For all his benevolence and inherent goodness, Simba is not without fault, as he is overprotective of his daughter Kiara, willing to break a promise to her in order to keep her safe. In this way, Simba shows that he does not fully respect his daughter, seeing himself as the older and wiser pride member. Thinking himself to know better, he often becomes blind to the outside world, focusing only on his family and their safety. In doing so, he comes to harm those around him. He also is protective over his son, Kion, even doubting his choices for the new Lion Guard.

History

Mufasa and Simba

Mufasa teaches young Simba

Simba is born to the king Mufasa and his mate Sarabi in the Pride Lands. As a cub, he plays with his friend Nala and receives lessons from his father Mufasa about the Circle of Life and being a king. After his uncle Scar kills Mufasa, Scar tells Simba to run away. Simba does, eventually arriving at the Jungle Oasis, where he meets Timon and Pumbaa. They teach him about "hakuna matata", which means "no worries". He grows up in the jungle, eating bugs and singing about his worry-free life.

Eventually, Nala arrives in the jungle and chases Pumbaa. She encounters Simba, and the two reunite. They fall in love during the song "Can You Feel the Love Tonight". Simba later returns to Pride Rock, where he defeats Scar and takes his rightful place as king of the Pride Lands, with Nala at his side.

They have two cubs, Kion and Kiara. Kiara ventures off to the Outlands one day, where she meets Kovu, an Outsider cub. After a tense encounter with Zira, both cubs are returned home. Simba is angry at first, but soon forgives Kiara. Kion became leader of the Lion Guard, and Simba is angry when he chooses a cheetah hippo, egret, and honey badger to be the other members. However, Simba soon comes to accept the new Lion Guard after they successfully thwart Janja and his clan. He is involved in a few of Kion's adventures, usually by giving advice and once by leaving the Pride Lands for a funeral, leaving Kiara in charge of the Pride Lands.

When Kiara, now an adult, is saved by Kovu, Simba is reluctant to let the former Outsider enter his pride. He is furious when it appears that Kovu has betrayed him, and promptly exiles him. Shortly after, Zira invades the Pride Lands with the Outsider lionesses. The Pride Landers fight back, resulting in the death of Zira. Simba then accepts Kovu, Vitani, and the rest of the Outsiders into his pride.

Name

Timon

Gender Male
Species Meerkat
Close Relations Ma (mother) Uncle Max (uncle) Simba (adoptive son) Bunga (adoptive nephew) Mabu (nephew) Monty (nephew) Mishka (niece)

Timon is a meerkat in The Lion King and The Lion King II: Simba's Pride. He is one of the two protagonists in The Lion King 1½ and The Lion King's Timon and Pumbaa, as well as a supporting character in The Lion Guard.

Appearance

Tall and thin, Timon is accustomed to digging and scurrying, a lifestyle which has made him into a physically fit tunneler. His fur is pale mahogany, broken only by five darker stripes on his back and cream hair on his underbelly and muzzle. He has longer fur on his elbows and chest, but it is for the most part short and smooth. Timon has a dark brown tail tip, ears, and toes, with his round, glossy nose being even darker in color. The hairs on his head are relatively short and scruffy, bright red in color. Like most meerkats, his eyes are black, though he has been pictured with brown irises.

Personality

Timon lives by the philosophy 'hakuna matata', meaning 'no worries'. He feels that if the word "turns its back on you", one should turn their back on the world. He loves grubs, particularly Utamu.

Though Timon lives a careless life, he nevertheless is brave and loyal, willing to serve as live bait for a clan of hyenas in order to help his friend Simba. He thinks of things in a relatively practical manner, and has adopted two different young animals only because he believes them to be or have potential to be useful. He rarely leaves the side of his pal Pumbaa, and is willing to risk his life in order to save him. Nevertheless, he has a tendency to dismiss Pumbaa's ideas and then present them as his own. He is wisecracking and somewhat mischievous.

History

Timon Meets Pumbaa

Timon meets Pumbaa

Timon is a member of Timon's Colony. He repeatedly causes trouble and is eventually cast out of his colony. On his search for a new place, he encounters Rafiki, who teaches him "Hakuna Matata," and Pumbaa, who becomes his friend. After many failed attempts, he and Pumbaa finally found a home in a jungle.

It Means No Worries!

"It means no worries!"

They eventually find Simba, a young lion cub, and raise him under their philosophy of "Hakuna Matata," with Timon having taken him in believing that he will be useful to them later. They teach him to eat grubs and have no worries about the past. One day, when Simba is a fully grown adult, a lioness named Nala attacks Pumbaa. Timon tries to help his friend, then watches as Simba attacks and battles Nala. To his dismay, however, the fight soon breaks up and Simba and Nala fall in love. Later, Nala awakens a sleeping Timon, explaining that Simba has gone to reclaim his throne. Together, Timon, Pumbaa, and Nala find Simba and assist him in overthrowing Simba's uncle Scar and his hyena minions. Afterwards, Timon brings his colony to the jungle where he had lived.

Later, Timon, now a resident of the Pride Lands, is surprised to discover that Simba's cub Kiara is female. He is tasked with watching her when she is older, with little success. One day around this time, Timon adopts a honey badger cub, who helped him find some Utamu grubs, and calls him Bunga. He is at first hesitant to allow Bunga to join the Lion Guard, but eventually allows it and takes part in a few of Bunga's later adventures.

When Kiara is an adult, Timon is pounced on by her friend Kovu, and he at first believes that Kovu is going to eat him. He is thankful to see Kiara and enlists her to assist him in chasing away some birds that are occupying his and Pumbaa's desired feeding grounds. It eventually turns into a game, even when they startle a herd of rhinos, and Timon admits that Kovu isn't bad. However, he is furious when it appears that Kovu has betrayed the Pride Landers for his former pride, the Outsiders. Timon takes part in a battle against the Outsiders, using Pumbaa to defend himself. He later cries as Kovu, an approved member of Simba's pride, presumably marries Kiara.

Trivia

  • A real meerkat at the Fellow Earthlings Wildlife Center, Inc. near Palm Springs, California was the inspiration for the movie version of Timon.
  • Real meerkats can only stand on two legs, while Timon can walk on two legs.
  • In the episode, "Once Upon a Timon" of The Lion King's Timon & Pumbaa TV series, Timon's last name is revealed to be Berkowitz. It is thought to be a reference to an animator, Justyn Berkowitz, who regularly contributed to the show.
  • Similar to Pumbaa's little flashback during the song "Hakuna Matata," Timon originally had his own musical flashback but didn't make it into the movie.

Voice Actors

  • Nathan Lane (The Lion King, The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, The Lion King 1½, first season; The Lion King's Timon & Pumbaa, Circle of Life: An Environmental Fable)

Name

Tojo

Species Lion

Tojo is a lion who was born during the reign of King Mufasa. He is a friend of Simba and appears in the Norwegian and Polish comic, The Orphan Birds.

Appearance

Tojofull

Tojo has orange-gold fur and big blue eyes. Unlike other lions, Tojo's muzzle connects with his underbelly. He has a Pride Lander nose and a tuft of fur on his head. In facial features, he looks exactly like Simba. He has dark rims on his ears and an apricot nose.

Personality

Tojo is goofy, clumsy, and very friendly towards everybody, adopting little orphaned birds, when anyone else would have eaten them. In short, he is a very big softie.

History

Tojo listens to Mufasa's story of the Great Spirit. He is doubtful of it, as he has an injured leg and is always getting injured. Simba suggests that the Spirit may have a reason for his injury. Later, Tojo creates wings to teach orphaned baby birds how to fly. In doing so, he bonds with the birds and creates his own set of wings, which shows that the Spirit had reason for Tojo's ailment after all.

Vitani

Vitani Headshot
Name

Vitani

Gender Female
Species Lion
Close Relations Zira (mother) Nuka (brother) Kovu (brother)

Vitani is a character in The Lion King II: Simba's Pride and The Lion Guard.

Appearance

Vitani Fullbody

A full-body shot of Vitani

Vitani is an Outsider lioness, and therefore bears a sharply angled nose and dark areas below and above her eyes. She has scruffy, dusty golden-brown fur, with a large tuft of it on her head that falls down onto her face. This attribute is much larger when Vitani is a cub, though it is still present when she grows older, it recedes so that it is less noticable. Her eyes are a vivid shade of blue, though they can shift color to pale violet or bright red in certain lightings. Upon reaching adulthood, Vitani develops dark rims on her inner ears and freckles on her muzzle, which were not present when she was younger. She has dark eyebrows that grow to be bushier as she gets older. She is very thin, likely the result of the Outlands' harsh conditions, but is also exceptionally strong.

Personality

Vitani is, in most cases, a follower rather than a leader, frequently doing as she is told by her mother Zira. Even as a cub, she scolds her brother Nuka for disobeying Zira and leaving their brother Kovu alone, displaying both loyalty to Zira and concern for Kovu's well-being. She has a mocking nature that occasionally makes itself known through taunts and teasing both as a cub and an adult. Vitani clearly enjoys fighting, as she invites her younger brother to engage in conflict and always battles with a smile on her face. She shows no hesitance in reporting her brother's wrongdoing, which indicates that she is usually loyal to those who are on her side, but thinks little of traitors. Despite these more harsh aspects of her personality, Vitani knows when to stand up for what is right and will willingly defy whomever has been commanding her. A bold warrior, she is willing to take on lions with far more experience than she. Despite this, she eventually comes to realize that after fighting for so long, enough is enough.

History

A young Vitani is deep within the Outlands at sunset, tugging on the branch of a snag. Her brother Nuka arrives, complaining, but she spares him no more than a glance as she tries to pull the branch until Nuka snaps it with his claw. This causes Vitani to tumble backwards, though she instantly rises and confronts him about leaving Kovu behind, as Nuka was told to watch him. They argue for a while until Zira returns, dropping Kovu to the ground, where Vitani instantly challenges him to a fight. Zira then enters a rock structure with her cubs and sings "My Lullaby," with Vitani enthusiastically joining in.

When Vitani is fully grown, she is tasked with lighting the Pride Lands on fire. She carries out this job quickly and efficientally, occasionally expressing annoyance at Nuka's antics as they use geysers in the Elephant Graveyard to set sticks aflame and then apply these sticks to grass. She later spies on Kovu, watching as he sleeps inside of Pride Rock, reporting back to Zira when he fails to kill Simba as he is supposed to. She partakes in the ambush on Simba, grinning maniacally as Zira frames Kovu for setting up the ambush. She attacks Simba and knocks Kovu out forcefully when he tries to help the king. She then pursues Simba along with the other Outsiders, stopping only when her brother Nuka is killed. She approaches the logs that crushed his body and quietly says his name.

The Outsiders soon attack the Pride Landers. Vitani battles Nala, first taunting the queen and then pouncing on her. However, when Kovu and the princess Kiara arrive, Kiara's peaceful words sway Vitani into turning her back on Zira's violent ways. She refuses to kill Simba and joins the Pride Landers. The other Outsiders follow her lead.

Trivia

  • In Swahili, 'vitani' means 'at war', with 'vita' indicating the latter and 'ni' indicating the former.

Darker blue feathers are present at the tips of his tail and wings, and three individual darker blue feathers stick up from the back of his head. Zazu has large eyes and a small body in comparison to his head.

Personality

"That's mister Banana Beak to you, Fuzzy!"
—Zazu puts Simba in his place

As majordomo to King Mufasa, his proper, dignified, nervous, and easily-rattled personality is the polar opposite in temperament of Simba and Nala. He tends to panic during emergencies, such as the wildebeest stampede. As a youngster, Zazu was incompetent, talkative nuisance, but soon learns to distinguish between what's real news and what's not, though he's not above some gossip. Despite his size, he's rather snobby and looks down on lowlifes, and is not afraid to use his dry, biting wit, and is a very loyal friend and servant to the royal family. However, Zazu also has a joking, somewhat morbid sense of humor that occasionally surfaces. He is proud to serve and report to the ruler of Pride Rock.

History

Zazu is present at the presentation of the new king Simba. He goes to the king's brother Scar's cave to announce Mufasa's impending presence; and Mufasa thankfully arrives just before Scar eats Zazu. The hornbill later gives Mufasa the morning report, then goes on to take young Simba and Nala to the Watering Hole. They give him the slip, but he soon catches up to him. After a close call with some hyenas, he takes Nala home. Later, Zazu hears of a stampede in the Gorge, where Simba currently is. He flies over to the terrified cub and assures him that his father is coming. However, Mufasa winds up dead, and according to Scar, Simba is, too. Scar takes the throne and traps Zazu in a ribcage, forcing him to sing songs as the hyenas run rampant through the Pride Lands, much to Zazu's displeasure. Simba soon returns and reclaims the throne as his companions free Zazu, and Zazu watches in awe as the new king roars.

When Simba's cub Kiara arrives, she is eager to explore. When her father mentions the Outlands, Zazu notes that there is nothing there but treacherous Outsider lions, and Simba agrees. He locates Simba's son Kion when need be, and accompanies Simba to an elephant funeral, reassuring him and teaching him the elephant language.

Zazu later assures Simba that Kiara will be fine on her first hunt just before Simba notices a wildfire. He is sent ahead to locate Kiara, and, spotting an Outsider named Kovu saving her, reports back to Simba. Kovu requests that he may join the pride, and Zazu notes that royal protocol calls for all debts being paid, but feels that in Kovu's case an exception may be made. Simba is later ambushed by Outsiders and wounded, and Kiara sends him to find help. But the trouble isn't over; Zazu soon reports back in a panic that Outsiders are attacking. The prides end up uniting, with Kovu and Kiara presumably marrying each other. Zazu covers himself as Timon and Pumbaa burst into tears next to him.

Here, she begins to scold him, but this ends up giving her a plan. She sings "My Lullaby" to Kovu after telling him that his training will soon intensify.

After Kovu has grown up, she reminds him of his mission: to kill Simba. He goes to the Pride Lands and becomes one of the pride, just as Zira planned, but later, Vitani reports that Kovu did not kill Simba when he had a chance. Angry, Zira devises a trap, announcing that Kovu cannot betray them.

She holds an ambush for Simba and Kovu, pretending that he had done as she asked and led Simba to her. However, Nuka dies and Simba escapes. Zira grieves for her "poor Nuka" and, after accusing him of killing his own brother, slashes Kovu's face, leaving a scar similar to Scar's.

Kiara vs Zira

Kiara and Zira rolling off the edge

Zira later leads the Outsiders into the Pride Lands, and, climbing on a rock, she tells Simba that it is over. A battle ensues, Zira shouting orders to her pride, but Kovu and Kiara, Simba's daughter, interrupt. Zira calls Kovu weak and orders him to move, but he does not. To Zira's shock and anger, the Outsiders starting with Vitani, change sides. She responds that they will die and lunges for Simba, but Kiara steps in between. The two roll off of a cliff, and Zira clings to the side of a ledge that Kiara landed on. Kiara offers her paw, but Zira does not take it and ends up falling into the turgid river.
